19/03/2008 : Rickard Shield 2008

Categories : | Explorers | Views : 193

The weather was described as the "worst ever" for the Rickard Shield. Despite this Northwinds not only managed to finish (many did not finish at all) as the highest placed team from Brunel District but came seventh overall in the whole of the county!

The route was a figure of eight with the base camp near Goblin Coombe at the centre. 23 teams of Explorers (and some Ranger Guides) from all over Avon were entered and got completely drenched in the rain which continued without a break.

On Saturday 8th March the Solar ESU entered the Hawkdean night walking competition. They entered two teams, which came 10th and 14th out of 16 teams. The unit and teams did really well as this was the first time the unit had entered this competition or done anything like this.

The teams had to navigate a 20km route at night as quickly as possible and get questions right at check points. Well done.

When you have some new Explorers to invest you need to come up with something quite special. After all anyone can do investitures in the hut.

After going underground in a coal mine and halfway up a climbing wall, the next step was to go underwater!
