GSL Workshops – South West Region
All GSL’s are cordially invited to attend one of the National GSL workshops to be held in the South West Region . Three workshops are being held:
28th September 2008 – Best Western Connaught Hotel, Bournemouth
29th November 2008 – Cribbs Business Centre, Bristol
31st January 2009 – Future Inn – Plymouth
Practical support
As we are committed to offering practical and pragmatic support to Group Scout Leaders there is no delegate cost for the workshop plus lunch is provided. The day will begin with a lively and interactive session to seek feedback on specific aspects and functions of a Group Scout Leader's role, for example recruitment; induction; the review process. The feedback gained from this session will help inform the design and delivery of future support for Group Scout Leaders. Following this session there will be the opportunity to attend three smaller workshops. A total of six workshops will be offered to select from.
- Role of the Group Scout Leader
- Induction to review
- Retention and motivation
- Challenging behaviour in adults
- Group development
- Recruiting adults

Note
Please see the attached email from Stephen Peck that explains where we are with GSLs forums.
I am sure that you have already cascaded the information throughout the Region so I am content that our GSLs will already be aware of these events.
Please can you encourage GSLs to register their email address and also DCs to ensure that there is a Group contact even if there isn't a GSL.

Colleagues
You will be aware that in promoting the GSL workshops we have worked on the basis of emailing those GSLs/Group Contacts who have registered an email address and then mailing all those for whom that information does not exist. This approach was used to reduce costs - both financial and environmental.
It has become clear that the number of email addresses that are not up to date or have been inputted wrongly is substantial. The result is a considerable number of people have not yet been notified of the GSL workshops. To address this situation we will be hard mailing all GSLs, Acting GSLs, Group Contacts, CCs & ACs in England and Wales over the next week to ten days. I am letting you know this information for three reasons. Firstly to let you know we are addressing the current gaps in invitations, Secondly to keep you informed as you may receive comment that some people have received the information more than once and finally to let you know that on checking the data available it has become clear that for 23% of Scout Groups we do not have a registered GSL or any other Group contact designated on the database. This of course means that 23% of Groups will not receive the mailing mentioned above so your help, and that of your CC/ACs in continuing to promote these events is still vital.
I hope all this helps
SP
